Nokia hopes to raise interes in smartphone technology
Nokia gave away the Symbian operating system source code hoping it will encourage developers to design new applications for the platform.
This move is viewed as an attempt to increase Nokia's market share in this segment of smartphones.
The now open-source Symbian OS is new under the control of an independent foundation.
Nokia has sold over 180 million Symbian-based phones so far.
